Herndon Arts Week Returns October 10-16, 2016 with a Celebration of Visual and Performing Arts

Next week, from Oct 10-16, Herndon will host a series of free and low-cost events known as Herndon Arts Week. Each year in early October, Arts Herndon celebrates the local art community with a week-long exposition of the Arts, including the visual and performing arts. During this week, special activities are held at ArtSpace Herndon as well as local restaurants, and local arts organizations arrange for activities that highlight the many opportunities to enjoy art in the town.

The winners of the 2015 Expressions Portrait Competition included “Matt” by Cathleen Lawless, “Emily” by Patricia McMahon, and “Girl” by Anna Watson.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2016

Kid’s Day
10am-2pm: Frying Pan Park, Herndon
Spend the Columbus Day school holiday with a day of free fun. See the animals, hike the trails, join a drum circle, take part in a dance workshop, and do arts and crafts. FREE.

  • 10:00am: Herndon Children’s Drum Circle
  • 10:30am: Story and Craft – Fuzzy Tales
  • 11:30am: Art with Monroe Street Studio
  • 12:30pm: Children’s dance workshop with Sun Dance Performance Company
  • 1:30pm: Herndon Children’s Drum Circle

 

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2016

Concert with The Folk Club of Reston & Herndon with Special Guest Scott Ainslie
7:00-9:30pm: Amphora Diner, Herndon
Celebrating their 31st anniversary in 2016, the Folk Club is a volunteer organization dedicated to the appreciation of music and the preservation of folk traditions. Come have Dinner at Herndon’s Famous Amphora’s Diner to enjoy a wonderful concert with The Folk Club and special Guest Scott Ainslie. Tickets are $13.00 at the door.

 

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2016

Arts Crawl
5:00-8:30pm: Downtown Herndon
Downtown Herndon will be illuminated “Shinning a Light on the Arts of Herndon” with seven sites or more featuring twelve local artists and artisans selling their fabulous works. Dance demos, live music, and complimentary samples provided by five popular restaurants and venues. Get a head start on your holiday shopping, or shop for yourself. FREE and open to the public.

Performance by Herndon Middle School Theatre – Shel Silverstein
4:00-6:00pm: Herndon Fortnightly Library
Come laugh, cry and have your heart touched by celebrating Shel Silverstein, through his wonderful poetry. Join us as the students of Herndon Middle School under the direction of Scott D. Parfumi, honor the fiftieth anniversary of “The Giving Tree” through spoken word, dramatization, and song.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2016

Expressions Portrait Competition Award Reception
7:00-9:00pm: ArtSpace Herndon
This painting exhibit features finalists in the 8th Annual Expressions Portrait Competition. 25 stunning and diverse portraits in various mediums were selected from 101 submissions by 57 artists. Competition juror and renowned artist Jordan Xu made the selections for the finalists.  Local artist and juror Tricia Cherrington-Ratliff will announce winners of the competition during the Awards Reception.

 

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16, 2016

Duke Ellington Musical Tribute: Cnversations with the Duke, Starring Child Prodigy Jose Andre Montano on Piano
4:00-6:00pm: ArtSpace Herndon
Step back into the 1920’s Harlem Renaissance days and the birth of the “night club” as we pay a historic musical tribute to the late great Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington. Special appearances by the Treble Clefs Ensemble and vocalists Candice Bostwick, Harlon Reece, Kari Paludan and Sarah Moyers. Tickets are $20.

Child prodigy pianist José André Montaño will perform a tribute to Duke Ellington on Saturday, October 16th.
